Statue of Ambedkar vandalized

A statue of Bhim Rao Ambedkar was vandalised in Ghaziabad on Tuesday morning. Agitators followers of Ambedkar then jammed the highway for some time, but dispersed when police assured them that a new one statue will be installed soon.

‘We want the statue to be shifted to some safe place, as its very close to the newly-constructed expressway. Some anti-social persons vandalised it to fuel tension in the area,’ said Rajkumar, General Secretary of Sidharth Vihar RWA. The statue was found to be vandalised and thrown in a nearby crater.

As a new expressway is being constructed to link Ghaziabad with Yamuna Expressway, the statue outside the colony falls very close to the expressway.

Members of the RWA had earlier written to district authorities to remove the statue to a safer site. According to police the incident came to light on Tuesday morning, when some residents tried to block the NH-24.

‘They were finally convinced when we told them a new statue will be installed on the site,’ said Rajesh Dwivedi, Inspector of Vijay Nagar police station in Ghaziabad.
