State-run Univ still a distant dream in Ggn

Two educational institutions in Gurgaon — a college and a state-run university still seem to be a farfetched dream for the Millennium City. Other than the three already existing colleges in Gurgaon, the fourth one is almost ready  — precisely 10 months after it missed its deadline in June 2015. However, the district’s higher education department has received no official information yet about the commencement of the lectures, faculties to run it and the curriculum.

The city’s biggest college —  Rao Tula Ram Model Government College of Commerce and Science has been constructed by Haryana Urban Development Authority at a cost of Rs 40 crore. According to the data received from the district education office, around 18,000 students presently study in the three existing colleges — Government College of Women, Dronacharya Government College and Government Post Graduate College in Sector-9.

The foundation stone for this college was laid by former Chief Minister of Haryana Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

The college has an auditorium that can accommodate nearly 1,000 students and also classrooms on each floor accommodating as many as 100 students each, said an official from the higher education department.

“A college which was built to cater educational needs to about 10,000 students has still not received notification from the government on either the curriculum or the recruitment process which have been delaying the project,” an official said.

Meanwhile, after 11 months of announcing the project, the administration also failed to allocate land for the first state university in Gurgaon. The higher education department had sent three reminders to the Gurgaon administration, but to no effect. Sources have revealed that no land has been finalised for the university as promised by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in April, 2015.

However, at present, the government has asked Deputy Commissioner T L Satyaprakash to prepare a report on the availability of land for the university which according to sources is still pending.

“It is surprising that the government is not able to find the land for the project when it claims to have attracted huge investments in the Happening Haryana Summit,” said Dr Ashok Diwaker, a former principal of Government College for Women.

Sources also revealed that presently the responsibility of finding the land is on the four MLAs of the Gurgaon district — Sohna, Gurgaon, Badshahpur and Pataudi who want the university within the jurisdiction of their constituency.
