With only a few months left for the assembly elections, the city Congress government is trying to ensure votes from recently regularised unauthorised colonies.
The city government is planning to clear a proposal in the Cabinet to speed up the halted development works in such colonies.
Sources said the government is mulling over development work which can be made visible immediately.
‘The proposal for construction of roads in these colonies will be brought in the Cabinet meeting, scheduled on Monday. Despite the fact that the three municipal corporations have not approved the layout plans for these colonies, the government will carry out development works,’ said a source.
Sources said that laying down of sewer lines and water supply will take a time of six months or more so the government is emphasising on construction of roads.
Around 583 out of total 895 regularised unauthorised colonies have been constructed on government land.
According to law, the government cannot start development works in these colonies without charging penalty from the residents. However, unauthorised colonies on private lands, which were regularised recently, can avail the government facilities. The construction works in these colonies has also been halted due to delay in tenders. The works have been distributed to various agencies such as Delhi State Industrial and
Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd, Delhi Jal Board, Public Works Department and others.
‘Development works has been completed in 475 unauthorised regularised colonies, work is in progress in full swing in 172 unauthorised regularized colonies and development work completed partially in 51 of such colonies till 31
March, 2013.
The work on ensuring water supply in 700 colonies, out of 895, has also been completed and laying of sewer line has been completed in 100 colonies,’ said a senior Delhi government official.
