Split stares at TN Cong, Vasan set to break away

Complacent Congress in the midst of faltering Gandhi dynasty has received a major setback in the southern state after its former Union Shipping minister GK Vasan on Saturday ‘threatened’ to sever ties with the party in an attempt to revive Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC).

TMC was founded by his father G K Moopanar in 1996 under the banner of ‘Valamana Tamilagam, Valimayana Bharatham,’ (prosperous Tamil Nadu, vibrant India) by breaking away from the Congress due to internal rift after Gandhis’ had an alliance with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

In 2002, TMC was remerged with the Congress but now once again after 12 years sensing threat to his political career — after Congress was cornered in the recently held Lok Sabah election — Vasan has decided to revive the party, which was founded by his father.
