Spill at Kudankulam nuclear plant injures six workers

Six employees at the Kudankulam nuclear power plant here sustained injuries on Wednesday following 'hot water spillage'.

‘There was a small incident. Some maintenance work was going on when there was hot water spillage.
Three of our employees and three contract workers suffered injuries,’ KKNPP director RS Sundar said.

The injured were administered first aid and later admitted to hospital, he said, adding, there was ‘nothing to worry’ about Wednesday’s incident.

The Indo-Russian joint venture has been facing opposition from locals on safety concerns even as the anti-nuclear protests crossed the 1000-day mark recently.

In 2011, thousands from the vicinity of the plant, have protested against it fearing a nuclear disaster. According to the protesters, evacuation of people in the event of a nuclear disaster would be impossible.
