Speeding truck mows down Delhi Traffic cop

At around 12.50 am, a speeding truck heading towards Noida first rammed into a police barricade near Delhi-UP border in east Delhi and later the errant driver dashed into a PCR van parked near the picket. Before colliding with the PCR van, the truck mowed down a Sub-Inspector, identified as Subedar Khan, who was standing next to the barricade and later hit Assistant Sub-Inspector, Girdhari Lal and constable Aqil Khan.
“Subedar died on the spot while the other two cops are undergoing treatment. After the accident, the driver and the co-driver managed to flee the spot leaving behind the truck at the crime scene,” Ajay Kumar, deputy commissioner of police (east) told Millennium Post.
The deceased was a resident of Seemapuri. He was declared dead on arrival by the hospital staff. The other two injured received initial treatment and were discharged on Tuesday evening.
He further added that on the basis of the registration number of the truck, we have managed to identify the driver who is still at large. “Raids at his possible hideouts are being conducted to nab the culprits,” Kumar added. All three cops were posted at the Police Control Room department and were on duty at the time of the incident. To keep a vigil on vehicle movements and specially on heavy vehicles, a picket was formed at Chilla Village near Mayur Vihar Phase-1, adjacent to Delhi-UP border.
There is a possibility that the driver was under the influence of alcohol but no liquor bottles were recovered from the truck. The other theory suggest that the accident might have taken place due to dense fog.
“We are investigating the case in all plausible angles. The exact cause of the accident would be learnt only after the accused is arrested,” Kumar said.
