Special stamps honour charity founded by Indian in S Africa

An internationally-acclaimed charity, started by Indian-origin doctor Imtiaz Sooliman, has been honoured with a set of special stamps issued by the South African Post Office, after being nominated by the public.

The South African relief organisation Gift of the Givers was honoured at a event attended by local residents and other volunteers involved in charity work.

The stamps were designed following two years of work after the charity was nominated by the South African public to be the subject of a stamp. The artwork has been done by Francois Joubert, a young student at Open Window Art School, who admitted that he had initially known nothing about the Gift of the Givers, but was touched by their humanitarian work in disaster areas across the globe as he undertook his research for the stamps.

‘At the South African Post Office, we regard stamps to be the ambassadors of our country, the same as the work done by the Gift of the Givers,’ said Lungile Nosa, Corporate Affairs Executive at the South African Post Office.

Sooliman said only the stamps could have described what his organisation stood for.
