SP wants separate reservation for non-Jatav Dalits

While there were repeated adjournments in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha over the demand to bring a constitutional amendment bill for reservation in promotion of Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes in jobs, the Samajwadi Party (SP) general secretary Naresh Agrawal demanded separate reservation for Pasis, Valmikis and dhobis.

'These castes have not been benefitted by the reservation policy and they are under represented in government jobs and other sectors. So we want separate quota for these castes,' said Agrawal. Pasis Valmikis and Dhobis are non- Jatav castes under Dalits.

While the SP leader made his demand for separate quota, the government on Thursday agreed to members' demand for bringing a Constitution amendment bill. Minister of State for PMO V Narayansamy informed the Upper House that a bill will be brought in this regard on August 22 after an all-party meeting, discussion on 21 August.

'The Prime Minister will call a meeting of leaders of all political parties on 21st of this month to discuss the issue of SC/ST reservation,' said Narayanasamy.

The decision to call for a meeting was taken after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh held a discussion with Bahujan Samaj Party(BSP) chief Mayawati on the issue.

Mayawati in the Rajya Sabha said the government had promised during the last session to call an all-party meeting to discuss quota in promotion.
