With Lok sabha election approaching the Samajwadi Party government is set to send a proposal to the centre demanding scheduled caste status for currently 17 most other back ward castes (MOBCs) as it had promised to do so in its assembly election manifesto.
In order to stress the cause, SP is holding a conference of these MOBCs including Prajapati, Kumhar, Kahar, Manjhi, Nishad, Mallah, Kewat, Bind, Machua, Kashyap, Bhatham, Dhiwar, Gond, Tairha, Bhar,Rajbhar and Biyar on 16 February at its state headquarters which will be presided over by the chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.
Earlier the CM had constituted a group of ministers headed by Social Welfare minister, Awadhesh Prasad to prepare the draft mentioning grounds for scheduled caste status being granted to thesecurrently considered backward castes. The group of ministers has prepared the draft which might be handed over to CM in the conference.
The minister of state for Medical Health department and a member of the group, Shankhlal Manjhi along with MOBC leaders of SP said, a survey carried out recently by central Government has shown that there is enough grounds to include these castes into scheduled castes category.
Accusing previous chief minister and BSP chief, Mayawati for depriving these castes of their rights for her own political interest, Manjhi said under Mulayam Singh Yadav govt in Oct, 2005 a government order was issued providing equal facilities as scheduled castes to these 17 most backward castes but was stayed by the High court following a writ filed by BSP. After Mayawati took over as CM she withdrew the recommendation of previous SP government and quashed it on 6 June, 2007.
Mayawati feared if these 17 castes were granted scheduled caste status they would vote against BSP causing her defeat in the elections therefore she withdrew the proposal itself which was sent by SP government, the minister said.
Stressing these 17 castes consists of 15 per cent of total population of UP and were capable of changing upcoming Lok Sabha election results in favour of Samajwadi party, Manjhi said, the most OBCs will participate in large numbers in the conference being held on 16 Feb which would be a land mark in their prolonged struggle for getting the scheduled status.
