South's parking woes soon a thing of past?

Cutting across party lines, the councillors of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) expressed serious concern over parking woes in the area. They agreed to constitute an expert committee for planning, categorisation and demarcation of the parking lots in order to prevent encroachment.

Raising the issue, BJP's Ashish Sood said the Corporation should devise a mechanism to recover the penalty from errant parking contractors so that the money charged by them comes to the SDMC. 'The credentials of the parking contractors have to be checked before the award of contracts. It has to be ensured that a blacklisted party does not get the contract in some other name,' Sood said.

However, the Leader of Opposition in the House, Farhad Suri, said while the city has a total sanctioned parking space for 3,000 vehicles, it has nearly 75 lakh vehicles.

'The BJP has failed in executing the ambitious projects of six automated multi-level parking lots. The parking lots that were to come up in areas like GK-I, Defence Colony and Lajpat Nagar among others are yet to be completed. These projects should have been completed in 2010,' Suri alleged.

The house passed the resolutions related to election of various committees.
