The charges for the monthly parking pass has also been increased by three folds. The new parking rates will come into effect from next month. Since BJP rules all three civic agencies in the city, the other two are also expected to follow suit soon.
‘The new parking rates will tame the parking mafia as they were already charging higher rates than prescribed by the corporation,’ said Subhash Arya, leader of house while announcing the decision.
The charges are however less than what was proposed by the municipal commissioner.
The committee also rejected the ‘congestion charges’ and premium parking rates.
‘The provision of congestion charges and premium parking will increase confusion and dispute at the parking sites as it is quite difficult and impractical to convince commuters to pay more for specific parking,’ added Arya.
The new policy will be implemented once the house gives its approval, informed Manish Gupta, commissioner of SDMC.
According to the new rates, the users will now have to pay Rs 20 per hour and a maximum of Rs 100 for 24 hours for four-wheelers. Earlier, it used to charge Rs 10 for ten hours. For two-wheelers, the charges will be Rs 10 per hour and Rs 50 for 24 hours.
Similarly, the monthly pass of parking a car will cost Rs 2,000 for 24 hours as Rs 500-700 earlier.
The proposal to increase the parking rates has been pending with civic bodies since October 2012.
As per the recommendations of Environment Pollution Control Authority, the commissioner had recommended to hike the parking rates.
Meanwhile, the opposition has slammed the corporation for increasing the parking rates.
‘This will put additional burden on the citizens. Rather than cracking the whip on illegal parkings in the city, the corporation has burdened the citizens with hiked rates’, said Farhad Suri, leader of opposition in SDMC.
