South mayor takes part in environmental summit

Mayor of south Delhi, Savita Gupta, on Tuesday attended Internation Council for Local Environmental Initiatives [ ICLEI ] Summit on ‘Cities for Life : City and Sub-national Biodiversity’ in Hyderabad. The Summit was organised by ICLEI along with Indian and  Andhra Pradesh governments and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. In the Summit, mayor highlighted the challenges of the civic bodies of metro cities and said that due to migration of people from villages and small towns to the cities, pressure is building up on the local bodies to provide proper civic amenities to the increasing population which often results in loss of greenery, cutting of trees and utilisation of agriculture land for construction of buildings. Mayor expressed her views and said that the process also leads loss of water bodies such as Ponds, Lakes and contamination of water. Delhi has its own water bodies and with emphasis/public awareness about the rain water harvesting, the city would have lesser dependence on the States like Haryana  and Uttar Pradesh for supply of drinking water.
