In order to control mosquito breeding more efficiently in the city, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (South DMC)has finalised deployment of domestic breeding checkers (DBC) for the whole year. Earlier, they were deployed only during the mosquito breeding season.
‘The initiative will improve efficiency of the department and round the clock vigil on breeding of mosquitoes in the city which is the root cause of dengue and malaria,’ said N K Yadav, municipal health officer (MHO) of South DMC. ‘Earlier, the corporation used to deploy DBC workers from April to November,’ added Yadav. He further informed that there are presently 1,350 DBC workers in South DMC which monitor mosquito breeding in the area and issue legal notices, challans to negligent residents.
‘The continuation of service for DBC workers will give a feeling of job security among them and they would be able to focus on their work,’ said Rajesh Gehlot, chairman of standing committee, South DMC approving the proposal. The DBC workers of the corporation have been infamous for going on strike in mosquito breeding seasons demanding regularisation of their job and making it a round the year employment.
According to the officers of the corporation, from from January, the DBC workers have issued 4,071 legal notices, and 3,340 places of mosquito breeding have been identified. A total of 164 persons have been challaned for negligence in mosquito breeding.
