South civic body releases Rs 200 cr for social projects

South Delhi Municipal Corporation (South DMC) on Monday announced the release of over Rs 200 crore for development and social projects.

The corporation also announced that it had cleared the outstanding payment of the contractors for their works till 28 February.

‘We have released entire councillor’s local development fund of Rs 1.3 crore in one go. Further, six months pension has also been released,’ said Rajesh Gehlot, chairman of standing committee in South DMC after taking the charge for the second consecutive term. He was unanimously elected for the post as Congress has not frayed its candidate for the post. Gehlot also enumerated the achievements of the corporation to exceed the tax collection in 2012-13 and wooed the officers to work for the welfare of the citizens.

‘It’s for the first time in the history of the corporation that we exceeded our tax collection target. The people must get the benefit of that and development must get a boost,’ said Gehlot supporting his decision to release the councillor’s development fund in one go. The leader of opposition in South DMC Farhad Suri and Congress councillors also welcomed the decision.

‘We had set a target of Rs 581 crore in the property tax but collected Rs 620 crore,’ said Gehlot. He emphasised that bureaucracy and leaders must work together to make  south Delhi clean and  green.

Besides councillors fund, Gehlot also announced the release of Rs 65 crore towards pension of widows and underprivileged section of the society to be distributed on councillors’ recommendation. ‘Now, its on councillors to expedite the development in their areas by suggesting various projects in the interest of people and also provide cash benefits to needy in the form of pension,’ he added.

He further informed that the corporation has also cleared all the dues of the contractors engaged for various development works, till 28 February. ‘On time payment of contractors boost our credibility and in turn expedite the development work.’ said Manish Gupta, commissioner South DMC.

‘Now, the cost of our projects will also come down due to competition among contractors to take up the work first,’ added Gupta. In the meeting Satender Chaudhary was elected as deputy chairman of South DMC.
