South civic body exceeds revenue target for 2012-13

The South Corporation has exceeded revenue targets for the 2012-13 financial year- in property tax, parking and advertisement. The Delhi government has also responded with an appreciation amount of Rs 60 crore for achieving the property tax target. According to policy makers and officers, this is a result of the new initiatives that were adopted by the civic body, such as beating drums outside the houses of tax defaulters, public awareness campaigns and strict action against defaulters.

‘Our initiatives such as beating drums outside the house of tax defaulters, scrutiny of self assessment property tax returns, action against big defaulters, public awareness campaign and bonus for performing employees gave a boost to tax collection,’ said Rajesh Gehlot, chairman of the standing committee at the South DMC. ‘In its drive against property tax defaulters, the corporation went on to attach the account of Delhi Development Authority (DDA), which was released only after they paid Rs 120 crore, the maximum amount received from any organisation. We also took action against corporate giants like Omaxe, Haldiram and Ansal Group,’ added Gehlot.

The corporation, for the first time, had also introduced performance-linked bonus scheme for employees of the property tax department.

‘It is actually a ‘stick and carrot’ scheme in which the non-performers will be punished,’ he added.
