South civic body attaches property of tax defaulters, urges L-G not to raise parking fee

The property tax department of South Delhi Municipal Corporation has attached the account of Aman Hotel at Lodhi Road in Delhi for an outstanding of over four crore rupees of property tax.

According to senior officers of the property tax department the hotel is owned by Lodhi Property Company Ltd a subsidiary of DLF group. ‘The action has been taken after the group did not respond to several notices of the department and declared a habitual defaulter,’ said B N Singh, assessor and collector of South DMC.  He further added that the accounts of several other companies and organisations would be attached if they don’t pay the  property tax.

The department had earlier, attached the bank accounts of Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Haldiram Marketing Pvt. Ltd. and Ansal Properties & Infrastructure Ltd and TDI Mall. The property tax department has collected a record over Rs 582 crore against a target of Rs 600 crore. ‘We will exceed our tax collection target,’ added Singh.

Meanwhile, the standing committee of South DMC has referred back the direction of Lieutenant Governor of Delhi to increase the parking charges in its area overruling the objections of chief law officer of the corporation. ‘We don’t want to put extra burden on tax payers but focus on illegal parking to increase revenue,’ said Rajesh Gehlot, chairman.
