The Bio-Technology department of Delhi Technical University (DTU), within 6-9 months, will launch a paper glucose test strip, which would be available in the market for Rs 5 only.
B D Malhotra from Bio-Technology Department of DTU said the paper strip will have a special type of biochemical coating, and a device with needle is also under manufacture, which would be used to take blood sample from the body. The blood will then be dropped over the strip for diagnosis.
Malhotra said, ‘If the sample contains 20-120 milligram per decilitre of sugar level, the strip will show a green spot. At 120-150, the strip will show a brown spot and above that, the strip will turn red. It will be the signal of danger and the patient will have to consult the doctor immediately.’
The bio-technology department has named this project Manufacturer of cost effective glucose biocensor for clinical diagnostic.
To finalise the project, the India Council for Medical Research has approved Rs 1 crore 45 lakh. Currently, the devices available in the market are basically electronic and cost Rs 1,000-1,200. This Rs 5 paper strip will be a boon to all patients.
