University of Delhi (DU)’s geography department is all set to own an automatic weather station. Considered to be the first of its kind in DU’s department, it is expected to assist students in better understanding of the subject and also support the government data bank.
‘We have to rely on regional met station at Safdarjung Airport and the aviation met station at Palam to acquire weather data and even accessing that possess problems at times. When the department will have its own weather station, the students will be able to learn better and will be able to measure temperature and humidity every day. In addition to that, the data collected by the department will also be useful for the government,’ said R B Singh, Head of Department, geography. He further added: ‘The deputy registrar has sanctioned it and it is under process. We are trying to install it as soon as possible.’ Attributing it to department’s hard work, he further said that prize money won by the department in Antardhawni was being used for installing the station. ‘Our department won second prize which amounted to Rs 7 lakh. Because of that, we are able to accumulate funds to have such a station in our own department,’ said R B Singh.
Raman, a student of the department, added: ‘It will be very helpful for us. A lot of things can be predicted using the weather like rain, monsoon, cloud cover etc and we will have accurate data. It will further help us if someone wishes to pursue his career in this particular field ahead.’
