Facing flak due to the ever-increasing number of stray/street dogs in South Delhi areas, the local Municipal Corporation has announced setting up of four sterlisation centres.
The SDMC has said that the centres will help in sterlising at least 100 dogs per day and will help in reducing gap between sterlised and non-sterlised dogs. Corporation officials said that the centres are likely to be operation in next couple of days as necessary arrangements have been made in this regard. Additionally, the SDMC has also announced online registration of pet dogs in its area.
According to the MCD officials, the Delhi government gave the go ahead in December last year following which the announcement was made. The officials said that initially centres will be operational from porta-cabins/makeshift premises and later they will be shifted to permanent buildings.
“As stray dogs’ number is increasing by leaps and bounds, the need of the hour is to control them. Following this, four new stations are being constructed. The Corporation, in association of two NGOs, has arranged all equipment to achieve the target,” said the official.
The officials added that the proposed centres will come up in Bijwasan, Mundela, Nangli and Masoodpur area and with the start of the operation, total number of dog sterlisation centres will augment from existing nine to 13 in SDMC area.
“We had sterlised nearly 21,000 dogs from existing centres which was about over 70 per cent of total dogs sterlised in the Capital last year. With adding four more centres we will help in sterlising nearly 35,000 stray dogs. In addition to this, the civic agency is also planning to open four new centres in Dwarka Sector-9 with sterlisation capacity of 200 per day.
The official maintained that the new centres will be based on lines on centres established in Mumbai, Baoddra, Tiruanantpuram, etc and will have the latest equipment. A total of 10 new dog vans will be purchased for transportation of dogs before and after sterlisation. The Corporation has also signed an MoU with NGOs to count number of dogs whether sterlised or non-sterlised.
Apart from this a software is also being developed for online registration of pet dogs. “We have been working on a software so we could maintain an online register of pet dogs. The move will not just help in counting pet dogs but will prove source of revenue generation of the SDMC,” he added.
