Sonia sends feelers to Anna Hazare on Lokpal

Congress president and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi has told anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare, through a communication, that the Lokpal Bill will be passed during the upcoming Budget session of the Parliament. Just a few days back, V Narayanasamy, Minister of State in the PMO, had written to him that ‘the government is committed to setting up a strong Lokpal to curb corruption and have the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill, 2011, passed by Parliament at the earliest.’

Sources close to Hazare at Ralegan Sidhi said that they received a letter from the Congress president. Hazare, in a letter to the Congress president a few days ago, had sought clarification on whether the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Central Vigilance Commission will be made free from government control and will CBI, CVC and all government employees fall within the ambit of Lokpal.

He had also said that he is going to start a nationwide tour to raise awareness about the need of stronger laws against corruption. Hazare also said that his tour was neither against nor for any party.

Hazare is set to start his nationwide tour for a strong Lokpal Bill and other various issues from Bihar on 30 January. His nationwide tour would go on till the next Lok Sabha elections. Observers say that the government might be trying to keep Hazare in good humour to keep Arvind Kejriwal at bay.
