Congress president Sonia Gandhi has been rated as the 12th richest political leader in the world according to a report in the Huffington Post which appeared on Monday. However, way ahead of Sonia, Russian president Vladimir Putin tops the list, followed by Bhumibol Adulyadej, the king of Thailand and Hassanal Bolkiah, the sultan of Brunei.
Gandhi with a net wealth of 2 billion dollars is believed to be richer than the British Queen Elizabeth II, sultan of Oman Qaboos bin Said and Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad, said the report. American president Barack Obama doesn’t figure on the list. ‘To put it in perspective, President Obama may be worth several million dollars, but he does not even come close to some of (his) contemporaries,’ says the report.
In order to collate this list, Huffington Post states, ‘For comparison, each country’s GDP per capita is juxtaposed with a leader’s personal net worth, just to show how different life is for the haves and have-nots.’ The list includes kings, presidents, sultans and queens. The richest leaders among the top 20 originated from the Middle East region.
Putin who leads the list has wealth amounting to 40 billion dollars. Adulyadej, whose name appears after Putin, has fortune worth 30 billion dollars.
Reacting to this survey, information and broadcasting minister and Congress leader Manish Tiwari said: ‘If Huffington Post would stick to huffing puffing then I think they would do a much better job for themselves. Because If you do put out these absurd and ridiculous things in print, then you only open yourself to be made a laughing stock. I would not even like to dignify it with a response.’
