Son stroke: Rajnath offers to resign if found guilty

The announcement by the former president of the ruling party created a political storm forcing the prime minister’s office (PMO) and party president Amit Shah to issue clarifications.

It has been learnt that Singh also lodged a complaint with the RSS alleging that malicious rumours were being spread against him and his family members at the behest of an insider from within the party. Reacting to the reports in a section of media including the Millennium Post which hinted at his son Pankaj offering assurance for transfers and postings within Delhi Police for a consideration, Singh said: ‘For the last few days there are rumours about alleged wrong doings committed by my family members. All I want to say is that I will quit public life and politics if these allegations on me or my family member is proven true.’

When asked what action he is going to take against such hate campaign, he said, ‘We are trying to find out from where the rumour originated and we will decide the next course of action.’ Though the home minister has denied having any discussion with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) over the controversy, party sources said he expressed his sorrow over media reports about his son being dragged in to the controversy.

Earlier in the day, before briefing the media, Singh had a closed door meeting with BJP president Amit Shah and reportedly expressed his displeasure over the whole episode, which he claimed was planted intentionally to defame him. The home minister reportedly told Shah that the disparagement campaign was done by someone inside the party out of jealousy because they are finding it difficult to accept the fact that he became an important figure in the present NDA government. Following the meeting, Shah dismissed rumours regarding Singh’s son and termed them as ‘baseless’ allegations.

‘It is my belief that the conduct of all our ministers is of high standard and their integrity is beyond doubt. All such propaganda against them is baseless and misleading,’ he said.

The home minister got a big jolt when he came across several media reports mentioning that Narendra Modi had scolded his son Pankaj, in his presence, for giving assurance to police officers in Delhi for a consideration. It was also reported that Modi was visibly upset over the whole issue and warned Pankaj to stay away from such dealings. Sources said the PM had summoned Rajnath and Pankaj to his chamber, and asked Pankaj about his work and day-to-day activities. Once Pankaj told him about his work and future plans, Modi had reportedly in a gracious manner asked him to return the money which he had taken from a police official to arrange his posting. Modi also told him that he does not want to hear such complaint in the future.

The appearance of the ‘news’ in media left Singh shattered. ‘Even if there was a meeting between the two leaders, how did the details come out in public,’ asked a leader close to the home minister. Later in the day, senior columnist Nalini Singh said there were cabinet ministers who were ghost-writing newspaper columns and arranging transfers and postings of journalists. Incidentally, Singh has said that even the PM was surprised when he came across such
media reports.
