Sohinimoksha to be part of Spain’s La Cabalgata de Reyes

Sohini Roychowdhury’s dance troupe Sohinimoksha is the first Indian dance troupe to be invited to take part in Spain’s historic and largest annual street parade “La Cabalgata de Reyes”, which will be held on January 5.

The festival, held in Spain attracts more than 50,000 spectators. Even more significantly, Sohini and her troupe of 30 dancers will be leading the 2016 parade with an India-themed dance opera, modelled on the tales from Indian mythology. It will make a spectacular beginning to the 60th year of Indo-Spanish Diplomatic ties.

La Cabalgata de Reyes has historical significance. According to Christian tradition, this was the day that Melchior (known as Melchor in Spanish), Caspar (Gaspar), and Balthasar (Baltasar) came to visit the baby Jesus and brought their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 

In a grand public celebration of this historical event, every year on January 5th, Spanish families – including the Spanish Royal Family and State Ministers - and tourists from across the world, line Madrid’s main thoroughfare to get a glimpse of the Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos, a re-enactment of the arrival of the Three Kings. 

Founder of Sohinimoksha World Dance & Communications and Sohinimoksha Artes de La India, Sohini is the 2013 awardee of the Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Samman by the House of Lords, British Parliament, London, and the 2015 winner of the Priyadarshini Award in New Delhi. 

The troupe has performed at The Noche En Blanco - Spain’s biggest cultural festival; Premiere of Slumdog Millionaire at the special request of director Danny Boyle and at the biggest annual global conference organised by the Government of India and hosted by the President of India– the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in 2013; Sohini was the 2010 European Brand Ambassador for India Tourism’s Imagine India campaign. 

Sohini’s dance troupe Sohinimoksha is made up of her students, and dancers, from all over Europe, Latin America, USA and India, whose performances in India, Europe, Latin America, Australia, USA and Russia have been garnering tumultuous audience appreciation, and rave critical reviews everywhere.
