Socialists break bread to revive Third Front

The meeting is significant as it did not have the participation from the Left parties and had only such leaders attending who belonged to erstwhile Janata Dal, the rainbow combination of different political groups with Socialist leanings.

Meeting at a lunch organised by SP chief Mulayam Singh in New Delhi, these leaders converged on common ground, sharing similar views on important issues like black money, price rise and unemployment. This collective can be seen as a non- BJP, non- Congress group. With the Left’s absence being starkly visible, the group left the window open for possible regional partners like the Trinamool Congress and in West Bengal and the Biju Janata Dal in Odisha.

Addressing media persons after the meeting, JD(U) leader and former Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar said the parties will work together as one unit and efforts will be made to bring more regional parties into the grouping. He said, ‘Following the meeting today, we unanimously decided that we should work together. As of now, we have decided to work together; whether a merger will happen or not we will see in the future.’ Kumar hinted at a possible merger of JD(U), RJD, SP and JDS in future. He said the meeting was aimed at bringing together the parties that have come out from the original Janata Parivar.

Attacking the BJP government, he said, ‘They had promised during the election campaign that they would get back every penny of black money, and that every individual could receive Rs 15 lakh each.

Therefore, that money should be brought back and must be distributed.’ Continuing his tirade, Kumar said the second major issue is unemployment. ‘The youth here were promised jobs and creating crores of opportunities. We have got information now that for the next one year there is a ban on new appointments. So, this is a big question which is related to the youth and they must get jobs and we will raise this issue strongly,’ he added claiming that the farmers of the country have been cheated as false promises were made to them prior to the polls.

Apart from Kumar, the luncheon meeting at Mulayam Singh’s residence was attended by JDU chief Sharad Yadav, RJD President Lalu Prasad Yadav and JD(S) chief and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, two leaders from the INLD, party MP Dushyant Singh Chautala and Haryana unit’s president as well as president of Chandrashekhar’s Samajwadi Janata Party (R) Kamal Morarka and others. Together the parties have a chunk of 15 Lok Sabha seats and 25 Rajya Sabha seats in Parliament.
