Snow brings joy to valley tourists

The night temperature has dipped to sub-zeroes. The snowy cold waves are sweeping the day. Yet the valley of Kashmir plays host to thousands of tourists—both domestic as also foreign. Officials in state tourism department say that the valley records around 2,000 tourist arrivals daily. They say that the latest snowfall might attract more tourists. ‘Most of the winter tourists come here to see the snow. We expect huge rush of tourists now’ said tourism official.

Kashmir valley experienced the season’s first snowfall in the previous night. While the higher reaches recorded 3 to 4 feet of snow accumulation, the plains witnessed one to four inch of snow. The high-altitude Srinagar-Jammu national highway recorded 2 to three feet of snow that led to its closure for the time being. ‘It is a thrilling time for tourists’ says Ghulam Mohammad, a houseboat owner in the Dal Lake. ‘My house-boat is full with guests. Many of them have left for Gulmarg to enjoy the snow’, he said.
