Sneer, leer, jeer

One of the most awaited movies of 2013 and while they say that good things are worth waiting for - they perhaps were talking about some killer release scheduled for next week since Dhoom 3 is just not it.

Yes, let’s accept that the Dhoom franchise has upped its game over the years and what we get to see is much sleeker than the long-haired John Abraham chapter. They had Hrithik stealing the show with his Greek god physique, but now you have Aamir and all that really stands out are his ears. Not kidding.

So while the antagonist Sahir (Aamir Khan) races down a building and makes cops go on a wild goose chase on a swanky BMW bike, the protagonist Jai (Abhishek Bachchan) makes his entry through a brick wall in an auto. Of course there is Ali (Uday Chopra) with his irritating dose of buffoonery.

In a recent interview, junior Bachchan said that he and Chopra are the essence of the Dhoom franchise, the others come and go - it is grossly unfortunate that that is the case. And yes, Aaliya (Katrina Kaif) who has one quarter of the screen time and role strength as compared to Bipasha and Reema Sen put together, Aishwarya of course played a vital role in Dhoom 2.

The enemy in Dhoom 3 are the banks, banks that destroy people in moments and had destroyed Sahir’s father. The son swears vengeance and as he gets his father’s beloved Great Indian Circus up and running, he systematically goes about destroying the bank in question, one branch at a time. But if there is a thief, the cops have to be brought in. And please do not search for logic where there is none - please accept that American cops cannot catch or effectively chase a thief so in comes Jai and Ali from Mumbai.  We’ll leave it at that.

Dhoom 3 is Aamir’s game because he has the maximum screen time and he carries the movie till the end, the rest just flit in and out. But as a whole, Dhoom 3 is boring, it is painfully long. There is great choreography, courtesy Vaibhavi Merchant but a potentially great title track is destroyed by Katrina’s lack of dance skills. On a track like Dhoom Macha Le, Miss Kaif, no one gyrates. They dance. And the last time you danced was in Agneepath.

Dhoom 3 has a very cool concept in place, but all that sneering by Aamir and Abhishek makes you feel like  their bathroom might have been off limits, for them, for days. It fails to hold your attention in places that it should and even the chase sequences become predictable at times.

Dhoom 3 will break even because of two reasons - Aamir IS entertaining and at times the movie is so ridiculous that it just might toe the ‘good’ line.
