Smugglers trying to sneak in gold through IGI Airport?

A Kyrgyzstan national has been arrested on Thursday for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country, gold jewellery worth about Rs 22 lakh, at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).
The accused was intercepted by Customs officials after his arrival here from Bishkek on Tuesday. On detailed examination of his baggage and personal search, one gold chain and a gold bracelet, total weighing 922 gm, were recovered, a Customs release said.
The gold jewellery was assessed to be worth Rs 22 lakh, it said, adding the passenger was arrested.
On Monday, another person was arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country, gold valued at about Rs 62 lakh at the airport.
The passenger, who hails from Delhi, was intercepted by the Customs officials after his arrival here from Dubai. On detailed examination of his baggage and personal search, gold bars weighing about 2.5 kg were recovered. The value of the gold was assessed to be at Rs 62.27 lakh, it said.
Earlier on May 25, an Afghan woman was among two persons arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle in gold, valued at about Rs.73 lakh at the International airport here. The woman was intercepted by Customs officials after her arrival here from Dubai on Saturday. On detailed examination, gold weighing 1.6 kg was recovered from a fabric waistband <g data-gr-id="24">worn</g> by her, a press release issued today by the customs said.
