Slum kids write to Jung for improvement of basic services

Children from Sudama Puri slum in Moti Nagar in West Delh have written postcards to Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung to improve basic facilities in their ares.

The children have also mentioned, in their postcards, about the unhygienic conditions prevailing in their locality.

‘Our toilet is very far from our place and is in pathetic condition. It is only open till ten at night. After that we have to defecate in open which is very scary,’ wrote Chinki, one of the children who stays at Sudama Puri Slum.

A total of 17 postcards were sent to LG, which was facilitated by an NGO — Katha.

‘Through this small batch of post-cards, the children of the locality have painted a dismal picture of their locality, which is absolutely unfriendly, in-conducive and unhealthy for the growth and development of these children,’ said Ashok Agarwal, national president of All India Parents Association (AIPA).

He further added that there is no play-ground for the children in the slum. ‘When they play at the roof of the drain, they are turned away abusively by drunkards, gamblers and police personnel frequenting the area. Also, there no community toilet facility due to which children as well as adults have to defecate in the open’, he said.

‘We have requested the LG to look into the issues with utmost priority and take steps to improve the living conditions of the children,’ said Agarwal.
