Slum dwellers pelt stones at cops, authorities; demolition drive postponed

Residents of a slum at outer Delhi’s Narela area clashed with the authorities when they went to the area for a demolition drive on Friday morning. When police officials rushed to the place to bring the situation under control, the agitated crowd hurled stones at them too.

No police personnel has been reportedly injured in the incident. It was only a police van that got damaged when stones were pelted. Later, police had to use tear gas and also fire bullets in the air, after which the crowd dispersed. However, the demolition drive couldn’t take place on Friday and it was postponed, said a police official.

A case of obstructing public officials from doing their duty was later registered at the Narela police station but no one was detained, said the official. He further added that the locals had also gathered around the railway track connecting Delhi and Ambala, and blocked the track for around two hours, disrupting the schedule of trains on that route.

According to Delhi government officials, while a detailed report of the matter has been ordered, sources claim that the officials are likely to re-initiate the demolition drive very soon.
