Slain traffic cop’s family to get Rs 1 cr as compensation

Delhi LG Najeeb Jung on Tuesday announced assistance of Rs one crore to the family of traffic constable Mana Ram, who was mowed down by a car while on duty on Saturday night.

Earlier in the day on Tuesday, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal had requested Jung to give Rs 1 crore as compensation to the family of Mana Ram. In his letter, he had also written that when the AAP government was in power here, it had given Rs 1 crore to the family of a constable killed by the water mafia while on duty.

Meanwhile,  Najeeb Jung added that the government will also explore the possibility of extending all help to the family of the cop, including possibility of a job to a dependent, subject to fulfilling certain requirements, according to a statement issued by the LG.

On Monday, home minister Rajnath Singh, who visited Delhi Police Headquarters, had paid homage to the constable.

Raman Kant, who was at the wheels of the Maruti Ritz car and accompanied by his two minor friends, was stopped at the Zakhira flyover by 25-year-old Mana Ram. After an argument, Raman Kant reversed his car and allegedly ran over Mana Ram dragging him for around 150 metres. The constable was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead. The trio fled the scene but was later nabbed.

Mana Ram had joined the Delhi Police’s traffic department just last year. He has a wife, a two-and-a-half-year old child and a younger sister. The Delhi Police had described him as a martyr killed in the line of duty and asked for substantial compensation for his family.
