Sisters’ murder: Mother arrested in Birbhum

The arrest came after marathon interrogation of the accused including the victim’s maternal uncle who was arrested earlier in this connection.It may be mentioned that on June 17, 15-year-old Sushmita and 13-year-old Pushpita Sadhukha were found dead in their house with their throats slit.

The murder weapon, a chopper commonly known as a bonti in Bengali was found beside the bodies of the sisters. The victims’ mother, Aparna Sadhu, had initially told the police that she went to a nearby temple to offer puja that evening when the incident had taken place.

From the very beginning of the probe, the police had not left the victims’ mother out of their purview.

During interrogation, the victim’s maternal uncle Ramprasad Saha had confessed that the crime was fallout of a dispute over an ancestral property and there often used to be altercation between Ramprasad and his sister Aparna over the share of the property.

Initially the police had considered that Ramprasad and his wife were the main persons behind the murder of the sisters. Ramprasad’s wife was also arrested.

Many other possible reasons behind the murder had also cropped up including the affair of one of the girls with a boy who doesn’t belong to their caste.

Local people had put forward many reasons behind the crime and the police had initially got confused. Finally, the victims’ father, who works outside the state, returned to Birbhum after getting information about the incident.

He had lodged a complaint with the police and confirmed that nothing apart from dispute related to property was the reason behind the murders.

Police later found in their probe that their mother were well aware of the plan to kill the girls and remained silent despite knowing the fact.

The police will reconstruct the entire plot after interrogating all the arrested persons face-to-face. They will be taken to the spot for reconstruction of the plot.

Apprehensive of the attack on the accused by the local people when they will taken to the spot for reconstruction of plot, an elaborate security arrangement will be made.
