Sister’s husband killed for ‘honour’

Brothers of a girl, who had gone against their wish to marry her childhood sweetheart, stabbed the youth to death near his house in Mangolpuri.

The deceased, Ranbir, 21, a resident of Mangolpuri’s P-3 block, was pursuing graduation from a private college in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. His girlfriend Jyoti was living next door. According to Jyoti, they got married on 17 April in an Arya Samaj temple against the wishes of their family members.

The couple, sensing the danger to their lives, had approached the high court seeking security after their marriage. The court had called both the families to the court and had taken from them in written that they would not interfere in the couple’s life.

However, the girl’s family did not keep their promise and her two brothers on Wednesday approached Ranbir, with an intention to kill him.

According to Jyoti, her father, Kuldeep Singh, assured them they would organise a proper marriage ceremony for them in the coming days. But on Wednesday night, she called up Ranbir and told him to come to her house with a lawyer.

But Ranbir came alone and after a heated argument with her brothers, Rahul and Gaurav, he returned to his house.

‘On Wednesday morning, Jyoti’s brothers went to Ranbir’s house saying that they want to talk to Ranbir about Jyoti and took him to a park outside his house where they stabbed him with a knife,’ said a police officer.

‘The incident was reported at 9.30 am on Thursday. When Jyoti’s brothers went to Ranbir’s house, his sister, Urmila, received them and saw his brother going out with Gaurav and Rahul. We have recorded her statement and arrested both the accused,’ said an investigating officer. Ranbir had met Jyoti when they were in school and loved each other since then.
