Singapore to help skill development institute

Delhi government on Tuesday cleared a proposal to set up a world class institute on skill development here with technical expertise and assistance from Singapore government. The green field skill development centre would be set up at Jonapur in South Delhi and it will impart skill development training on par with the best of such institutes in the country.
‘The proposal to set up the institute was cleared by the cabinet today,’ Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said after a cabinet meeting.
Officials said the institute would be modelled on the Institute of Technical Studies, Singapore. ‘We intend to develop the institute as a national centre of excellence for skill development in the fields of health care, medicine, construction and manufacturing sectors,’ Dikshit said.
The Singapore government has offered to provide technical expertise to the proposed institute during Dikshit’s visit to that country in October last year.
Dikshit said Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong is scheduled visit New Delhi in July and an MoU for the project is likely to be inked during the visit. ‘The collaboration will help in getting the experience of the Institute of Technical Education in Singapore which has been instrumental in setting up of such world class institutes in more than 10 countries,’ she said.
Dikshit said setting up of the institute will ‘go a long way’ in overcoming the mismatch between employment opportunities and skilled manpower. The chief minister said the institute will have a total intake of 2,400 students. She said government has already sanctioned Rs 11.72 crore to acquire the land for the institute.
