Police forces were deployed at a cinema hall in Singapore to manage a crowd of over 100 foreign workers who refused to leave the theatre after the premiere of Tamil film star Ajith Kumar’smovie Veeram was cancelled.
The police were deployed after some in the crowd began shouting at cinema hall staff when screening of the Tamil movie was cancelled last night at the Rex theatre, which falls within Little India precinct where one of the worst riots in 40 years took place recently following death of an Indian national in a road accident. The protesters had lined up for more than six hours.
Three police cars and 10 officers were at the theatre in Little India precinct, a common day off place for South Asian workings. No arrests were made.
Among the patrons, Suresh Veerasamy, 29, and Tamal Shanmugam, 28, said they took a day off to see the movie.
The two, who work as construction workers here, said they were at the theatre from 6 am on Thursday to buy tickets for the 9 pm show. Both claimed they lost 70 dollars in wages for the day.
