After the station house officer (SHO) of Uttam Nagar police station was suspended on Thursday following an allegation of asking a teenaged gang-rape victim to describe how she was raped, the ‘imperfect’ past of the family members of accused and victim of the gang-rape has come to light.
The aunt of the gang-rape victim along with the 17-year-old girl who was arrested on charges of luring the victim and taking her to the rapists have tainted pasts. Even the 17-year-old’s mother has a dubious past.
The cases against all three of them have been mentioned in the record register maintained by officers at the Uttam Nagar police station.
A police official who was earlier posted at Uttam Nagar police station said: ‘The 34-year-old aunt of the girl has a criminal background. In October 2003, she along with her son were accused of rape,’ he said.
‘The aunt had allegedly helped her son in kidnapping a girl Ankita (name changed) whom her son loved. But after Ankita managed to escape, she filed a complaint at Uttam Nagar police station alleging that she was kidnapped and raped,’ he added.
The aunt and her son were arrested and booked under the sections 363 (kidnapping), 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage) and 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code.
The minor who was raped on 12 September also allegedly has a tainted past. A source in Delhi police said, ‘In February 2013, she went to her friend’s residence in Uttam Nagar and jumped from the first floor. She told police that her friend had tried to rape her and she jumped in order to save herself. During investigation, the alleged accused was given a clean chit.’
‘The girl’s mother in the year 2000 had levelled rape charges against a police officer and before the case was even lodged in the police station, the victim and the accused reached a compromise by paying Rs 4 lakh,’ the source added.
