Shinde flags off 370 PCR vans, move aimed at making city safer for women

In order to address the issue of rising crimes against women and nail the pace at which crimes are rising in the national capital, Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Monday flagged off 370 new Police Control Room (PCR) vans fitted with GPS system and mobile phones.

Speaking on the occasion, Delhi police commissioner said, ‘It’s an important day for the Delhi police because such a large number of PCR vans have been never sanctioned before and the entire credit goes to the home minister, who made it possible.’
Shinde expressed pleasure over the move to introduce the new vans. ‘It’s a pleasure flagging off these vans within three months of sanctioning them,’ the home minister said. He further said that the shortage of PCR vans had led to an increase in the response time to any distress call.
‘As of now the response time is eight to 10 minutes. These vans will reduce it further,’ Shinde said.
‘We want police and the public to be friends. But law and order cannot be taken care off by police alone, we need public awareness at all levels,’ he said.
Kumar said the newly-inducted vehicles will be deployed near girl’s schools and colleges, roads taken by women to return home after offices and places where they go for recreational purposes.

‘They will also patrol newly inhabited areas, places which are crime-prone due to their proximity with neighbouring states,’ Shinde said.
The main aim of the PCR vans will be to ensure women’s safety in the national capital. The gang rape of a medical student in a moving bus on 16 December, 2012, increased public pressure on the Delhi police to address the issue of
women’s safety.
