Shettar charges Yeddy of batting for Congress

Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on Sunday charged KJP President B S Yeddyurappa with openly supporting Congress in the 7 March urban local body polls to free himself from CBI cases over his alleged involvement in illegal mining.

‘Yeddyurappa is under the tight grip of Congress due to CBI cases and wants to come out of it. Hence he is openly supporting Congress in the 7 March urban body polls,’ he said. Shettar alleged that Yeddyurappa does not mind Karnataka Janata Party candidates losing the polls, but is coaxing people to vote for Congress to trounce the ruling BJP. ‘This clearly shows he is under the tight grip of the Congress,’ he alleged.

Yeddyurappa had said yesterday that his KJP would support Congress in all wards where it did not contest and urged his supporters to work for Congress candidates in such segments to defeat BJP and Janata Dal(S). Shettar was speaking after a BJP road show in the run up to the polls.

Meanwhile, speaking to reporters at Davangere, Yeddyurappa denied Shettar's charge and said KJP does not have an understanding with any party, including Congress, for the urban local body polls. On the contrary, the JDS and BJP have arrived at an understanding for the polls, ‘but my party is least bothered about it.’

He claimed the results of urban local body polls would be a precursor to the coming Assembly elections and that it would show the people the strength of the KJP.

The people were allegedly disappointed with BJP rule, he said, adding that the KJP, contesting all 224 assembly seats, would 'undoubtedly' come to power as there was huge support for the party. Asked if National BJP President Rajnath Singh had invited him back to the party, Yeddyurappa said he does not intend going back.

Leading the Congress Road Show in Mysore, Opposition leader Siddharamaiah also said ULB polls would be a referendum on the coming Assembly polls. He alleged that the ruling BJP is steeped in corruption and internal bickerings which has disappointed the people. Siddaramaiah said the electorate has already estimated that the Congress alone is a reliable party ‘as father-son JDS party is unethical and KJP has no base and credentials.’
