Sheila’s days are over: Vijender Gupta

Delhi BJP president Vijender Gupta seems confident enough to carry the victory in all the three corporations of Delhi to the Assembly Elections slated next year. After much-hyped speculations in South Delhi Municipal Corporation, he finally managed to get the coveted post of Mayor under BJP’s cap and addressed the media, with all three Mayors, on Thursday.

In an exclusive interview with Siddheshwar Shukla, he flays the Sheila Dikshit government and says people of Delhi have made their mood to oust Congress in next Assembly Elections. Excerpts:

Whom do you credit for victory in all three municipal corporations?

We work for the welfare of people and do not have double standards. Our agenda is very clear. Providing basic facilities and infrastructure to citizens is our objective. The credit goes to every party worker.

Was Congress defeated because of prevalent corruption and price rise or did BJP win for its better performance ?

I will say, both. Voters were fed up with false promises of ruling government, their inefficiency, corruption and sky rocketing prices. So they rejected Congress and chose BJP for its efficient services, developmental works and corruption-free image in the last five years.

Your critics say BJP’s victory will be limited to corporations only.

Dil behlane ke liye Ghalib khayal achcha hai [it’s a good thought to console themselves]. People have outrightly rejected Congress. They have been exposed among voters. Their much-hyped project, Commonwealth Games (CWG), is remembered as ‘Bad Wealth Games’. Congress was badly defeated in East Delhi where most of the CWG venues and projects are situated.

But BJP’s seats also came down in this election.

But we managed all three corporations. We have done better in comparison to last elections. The results are hopeful.

What is your strategy to win people’s confidence in assembly elections?

Congress government has no policy for development of Delhi. After the defeat in corporations, the Chief Minister is working in a hurried manner, without proper planning. They have lost the temperament to rule in the city. Even the CM is not showing any will  to bring about development.

We will keep fighting for the people of Delhi. Our three corporations will work in a coordinated way to provide best possible facilities to people. We have our Vision Document 2025 for Delhi and have planned everything.

What will be priorities for newly-elected corporations?

Public toilets, parking, and computer education will be the priority. The three corporations will draft a plan within six months to provide best possible services to city in the limited resources.

What is your biggest worry for Delhi?

The pressure on civic amenities is increasing rapidly but the system is not firm and prompt enough. The power tariff is going to increase once again.

What will be role of BJP?

It’s a clear case of connivance of the government with private power companies. Now they are going to review every three months, which means power tariff will be increased quarterly. They silently give bail-out packages to power companies and extort consumers.

Critics also say BJP does not have a face in Delhi.

We have a face and it will be projected during Assembly Elections.

If given a chance to become Chief Minister, what will be your priorities?

Eduction and health will be our [BJP’s] priority.

Who is your ideal politician?

Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay. His life is full with inspirational instances.

What is your favourite way to pass time?

I just relax (laughs). I listen to classical music. I like Mukesh, Rafi and Lataji.

Do your write a diary?

I don’t but my wife does.

How do you manage your family and professional life?

Almost all the time goes to my political life. Family has to suffer.

Any plans to write your autobiography?

Will write some day but don’t have enough time right now.
