Sheila says women scared of approaching cops

Women in the national capital are scared of going to police stations to register their complaints, chief minister Sheila Dikshit said on Wednesday. The Delhi chief minister was expressing her concern over the law and order situation in the national capital at an event at the Indian Women’s Press Corps.

‘Common people cannot go to the home minister, Lt Governor or Delhi police commissioner. They come to me. I have to raise my voice on their behalf,’ Dikshit said, adding, ‘increasing cases of crime against women remain a matter of great concern. Women find it difficult to go to police stations to register their complaint as they fear that they won’t be heard.’ The chief minister admitted that improving the relationship between women and the police remains a big challenge.

‘The relationship between women and police has to change and we have to sensitise the police in the regard,’ Dikshit said.

The city government has no control over the Delhi Police, which is under the jurisdiction of the union home ministry. The government has several times demanded that police be brought under its control for better management of law and order in the capital.

Dikshit also called for the need to change the mindset of the society. ‘Rapes take place in the city every day and the culprits in the majority of cases is a family member or a neighbour. The society has to change and collective efforts need to be made for this. We need to evolve a strategy to awaken people,’ she said.

The chief minister added that the people in the city have forgotten basic courtesies and have become insensitive. gotten basic courtesies and have become insensitive,’ she said.

The chief minister agreed that safety of women in public transport remains an issue and said efforts are being made to improve it.
