Back in the city after resigning as governor of Kerala, the three-time chief minister in a cleverly punctuated statement on Thursday said: ‘In a democracy, elected governments are always good as they represent the people. If BJP has reached such a situation that it can form government, it is good for Delhi.’ Dikshit’s statement is being viewed with concern that does it indicate her desire to return to active politics.
That the political veteran continues to enjoy confidence of the first family is evident from the fact that on her return to Delhi she was immediately appointed chairperson of the Congress committee to oversee first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s 125th birth anniversary celebrations. ‘As far as I could understand, every MLA, whether he is from Congress or AAP or others, doesn’t want election,’ she said inviting ‘shock’ from her party, but surprisingly no senior state or central leader decided to react. It was left to spokespersons of lesser stature to draw distance.
Though she indicated that she preferred an elected government in office, she also said that it is not clear yet how the government will be formed. ‘It is yet to be seen how the government is formed and what challenges will be there for a minority government. And, can they (BJP) cross this and not ... it is up to them (BJP),’ she said, drawing a thin line between an elected government and a BJP government.
Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay said, ‘I praise her for her straightforward statement. She has given this statement carefully. It is not about whether a government will be formed or not, but how you are behaving in politics.’
AAP alleged that Dikshit was giving such statement as she knows that if AAP comes to power, investigation against her in Delhi will be fast-tracked.
