Sheila Dikshit fined by court for not appearing in defamation case

‘It’s interesting that she was absent in seven consecutive hearings of the case she had filed herself against me as a tool to gag the voice of opposition,’ said Vijender Gupta. ‘The date for personal appearance was fixed as per the convenience of Dikshit on request of her lawyer,’ added Gupta. He further said that Sheila had told the court through her advocate that she would personally appear on any Saturday in August. Subsequently on 30 August, the last Saturday of the month, was fixed.

Earlier, Dikshit was imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 for non-appearance which was deposited by her in January this year. The case dates back to 2012 when then Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit filed a case of ‘defamation’ in a Delhi court against Gupta, who was Delhi BJP president, for using ‘uncivilised’ language against her during election campaign.

‘I had just raised the prevalent corruption and apathy of Delhi government responsible for the loot of public money by private power companies. The government and power regulator DERC were unable to tame power distributing companies,’ explained Gupta. He added the ‘defamation case’ in court was only a political tool used by Dikshit and her government to silence her opponents from bringing out cases of corruption and abuse of power in her 15-year tenure as the Delhi chief minister in public view.

‘I do not follow the policy of shoot and scoot. I will make sure that the case against Dikshit’s misuse of public office reaches its logical end and the guilty are punished. Only then can we restore people’s faith in democracy,’ said Gupta.
