Shehla Rashid condemns Kanhaiya’s comment on Gujarat, 1984 riots

In a sudden move, the JNU student union’s vice-president Shehla Rashid has rendered a condemnation over the comment made by the JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar. Kumar in a symposium had said:

“The Gujarat riot in 2002 was state-sponsored and therefore it was different from the 1984 riots.”

“Both 1984 and 2002 riots were state-sponsored violence and we must not draw contrasts between two human tragedies...,” Rashid said.

“However, I was not present in the seminar so I am not able to comment much on what Kanhaiya said but I believe, he should not have made such comments,” Rashid added.

“Riots are riots, massacres are massacres no matter whether it is done by the state or an individual. Indeed, there are differences between 1984 riots against Sikhs in the Capital and 2002 riots against Muslims in Gujarat but human sufferings were same,” Rashid further added.
