Shame city: Differently abled minor raped in Mukundpur

A 12-year-old differently-abled girl was  brutally raped in the Mukundpur area of north-west Delhi on Wednesday afternoon. She has been hospitalised and remains in a critical condition. Soon after people came to know of the incident, neighbours and others gathered outside the hospital where she is being treated and the local police station in protest.

The incident took place at approximately 12 noon in the Samta Vihar area of Mukundpur. ‘The victim had been playing outside her house in Samta Vihar, when the 42-year-old accused, Ram Kumar, who runs a shop nearby, lured the victim with some chocolates and took her inside his shop,’ said a police official.

According to police officials, the girl’s mother later found her crying inside the shop. She was also bleeding profusely. When questioned, the minor victim told her mother about the incident, who then informed the police. As soon as news of the rape was leaked, locals gathered and beat up the accused, before handing him over to the police. He has been arrested.

‘The victim was rushed to Babu Jag Jivan Ram Hospital, where medical tests have confirmed rape. She is undergoing treatment and her condition is said to be critical,’ said a police officer.
Meanwhile, locals also protested in front of the hospital and the Bhalswa Dairy police station. Members of Aam Aadmi Party were also present during the protest.

'The incident once again betrays the impunity of the perpetrators, who remain undeterred by any fears of police action and judicial system,' said a protester.

'Increased patrolling and deployment of police officials should be introduced. We need standardised investigation procedures to be circulated to all police stations, with stern action against police personnel who do not implement them,' said another protester.
The victim’s father is a daily-wager and mother a housewife.
