Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah on Wednesday called for a Congress-free Assam to solve the problem of illegal migrants.
“The Congress, since Independence, has encouraged illegal migrants from the neighbouring country as part of its vote-bank politics and compromised with the security of the state,” he told party workers at a rally in Nagaon.
“If Gandhiji was not there, Assam would not have been a part of India,” he observed tracing the pre-partition developments. “Since Independence, people of this state have had to struggle against the injustice of the Congress-ruled Central government,” Shah said.
Shah urged party workers to make Assam free from Congress and ensure that a BJP government is formed in the state so that the problem of Bangladeshi infiltrators gets resolved.
Shah said the problem of illegal migrants was not just confined to Assam but was a matter of concern for the entire country. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken the initiative to resolve the problem by signing the Land Boundary Agreement with Bangladesh and identifying 60,000 illegal migrants for the first time,” he said. Shah flayed the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government in the state for failing to ensure development, despite being in power for the past 15 years. “The Congress was in power for the last 15 years and represented by the Prime Minister for ten years but it is still lagging behind in the race for development,” he alleged.
