SFI, teachers pan move to ‘identify’ answersheets

Delhi University vice chancellor Dinesh Singh’s team has decided to make mandatory for students to write their name, roll numbers, father’s name and college details on their answersheets. The move has been opposed by Students Federation of India [SFI] and teachers.

Saikad Ghosh, assistant professor of English in Khalsa College, said, ‘Writing the name of father in the answersheet may lead to bias and prejudice, and may lead to more discrimination.’

He added, ‘The examination branch of the university has collapsed completely, with goof-ups in question papers, massive errors in the marksheets and long delays in the declaration of results.’

Dev Abha Habib, assistant professor of Physics in Miranda house and former Academic Council member said, ‘Until now, students used to write their names and other details on a sheet attached to their answer sheets, which was detached before the sheets went for evaluation and attached again after evaluation. This process ensured secrecy and hence, transparency. The decision, apparently taken to save time [to accommodate changes such as four-year graduation], is against the long-standing system of maintaining transparency through secrecy.’

Sumeet Tanwar, president of SFI, said, ‘On one hand the university is trying to shut down the re-evaluation system and on the other hand, is exposing students’ identity. This will create trouble for students in future.’

Ghosh said, ‘This decision clearly points towards an unplanned and reckless set of reforms, which are being pushed without any consideration to the immediate stakeholders in the university.’
