In a statement released by JNUSU vice-president Anubhuti and general secretary Sandeep Saurav, it says: ‘This is to inform the student community that JNUSU president and joint secretary are no longer holding their offices.’
‘After the allegations by different student organisations, it is unfortunate that the issue has been politicised. Maintaining the principal of Gender Sensitisation Committee against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH), JNUSU decided that president and joint secretary should step down. It is done so that inquiry can be fair,’ said Anubhuti, vice-president, JNUSU.
The member of rival student organisation; Student Federation of India (SFI) said that this move came after a lot of pressure by various student organisations in JNU. They should have done it before. It came after all organisations released a joint notice in which we criticised JNUSU move to make the issue public,’ said the member.
The issue came to light on 28 July after posters came up in university premises through which the two student leaders denied charges of sexual harassment.
‘We would like to inform the student community that a complaint in GSCASH has been filed against us. We were informed of this complaint on 24 July and were shocked by it,’ said a joint statement released by Chawdhary and Hamid.
Stating the action as violation of rules of GSCASH, the gender community on 29 July issued public statement saying: ‘Public discussion of any case by the defendant amounts to a violation of confidentiality of their restraint order against any accused.
‘In keeping with those rules, procedures and principles that we all hold dear, we are bound to engage in public discussion regarding the complaint or put forward a public defence in any way.’
Meanwhile, members of the GSCASH remain tight-lipped about the issue.
