Setback for BJP: Two party MLAs arrested

Thursday appeared to be a bad day for BJP as its two legislators were arrested by CBI in two different cases. Party’s legislator Anand Singh from Belikeri Port in Karnataka was arrested in connection with alleged illegal export of iron ore. While another BJP MLA Kunwar Bhartendu Singh, accused of inciting last month riots in Muzaffarnagar, was apprehended by Uttar Pradesh police and sent to 14-day judicial custody.

Singh, a former Karnataka minister, is the fourth MLA to be arrested by the CBI in the case after B Nagendra and Satish Sail, both independents, and Suresh Babu of BSR Congress headed by former minister B Sriramulu, a close aide of mining baron and former minister Janardhana Reddy, now in jail in an illegal mining case.

The BJP MLA’s arrest comes in the wake of CBI Special Court rejecting his anticipatory bail plea on 7 October.

Meanwhile, the MLA from Bijnor constituency is the third legislator from BJP who has been arrested on the charges of violating prohibitory orders and provoking communal tension by making inflammatory speeches during a panchayat meet in Nagla Mandaur village, police said.
