Set ablaze for dowry, woman dies

In yet another case of dowry death, a woman and her 13-month daughter were set on fire by her in-laws in south Delhi, police said on Sunday.

While the 25-year-old woman was burnt alive, her daughter is fighting for life with over 75 per cent burn injuries.

The incident was reported on 6 october from Sarojini Nagar area, when the police got information that two have been set on fire. Cops reached the residence in NDMC colony of Sarojini Nagar, where they found Parivartika, 25, was lying on the floor along with a girl child, who was unconscious.

Both were immediately rushed to Safdarjung hospital, where Parivartika was admitted with 90 per cent burns. On late Sunday evening, Parivartika breathed her last in a hospital.

The girl child, however, is alive and fighting for her life. According to the doctors, the child has suffered over 75 per cent burns and is undergoing treatment.

A police official said the victim’s in-laws are well educated. Ashustosh Gupta, her husband, is an event manager in an MNC in Delhi and is drawing a handsome salary.

Her father-in-law R M Gupta works as a civil engineer. Her mother-in-law Sushma Gupta has been arrested by the police.

Parivartika and Ashutosh got married in 2010. Before that, she had completed her BTech from a reputed college in NCR and had been offered many jobs. But she decided to not take up any employment because of her daughter. Her father, Kashaamveer, is a doctor and runs a private clinic in Aligarh. ‘He has already paid Rs 6 lakh to Pariwartika’s in-laws and was in the process of giving them the remaining amount. But, they burnt Pariwartika to death,’ said a police officer, citing Kashaamveer’s complaint.

Gupta and Ashutosh are absconding as of now.

According to Parivartika’s family, ‘She was harrassed by the in-laws soon after the marriage. After she gave birth to a girl, they used to beat her and demand money to buy a new flat. Recently, they poured petrol on her and set her ablaze.’

‘A case has been registered against all the three accused under appropriate sections. Also, a man-hunt is on to nab the other two accused,’ the official added.
