SDMC to instal webcams for online monitoring of mid-day meal kitchens

On Friday, South Delhi Municipal Corporation is all set to become the first civic body in the country to have introduced online monitoring of the centralised kitchens of NGOs supplying mid-day meal to schools in its area, through the installation of webcams. The corporation is also planning to deploy mid-day meal guards to protect the food from any adulteration during transportation from kitchens to schools.

'The project would be demonstrated at the head quarters of SDMC at Civic Centre where the education committee chairman Satish Upadhayay and officers of education department will monitor the kitchens of these NGOs from the office,' said spokesperson of South DMC. The decision for webcam monitoring of mid-day meal kitchens was taken after the tragedy in Bihar where over 20 students lost their lives after consuming contaminated mid-day meals.

'We have ordered NGOs supplying mid-day meals in SDMC-run schools, that staff members  working in kitchens, transportation of food from kitchen to schools and engaged for its distribution must have police verification. Regular medical examinations of these staff members should also also be conducted to ensure that the food being served to the students is safe,'said Upadhayay.

There are 588 SDMC-run schools, where four lakh students are served mid-day meals. Three NGOs, Maitri Research Foundation, ISKON Food Relief Foundation and Jay Gee Group have been entrusted with the responsibility of providing the food under this scheme.
These NGOs have already installed CCTV cameras in their kitchens, and will now also have web-cam monitoring. Senior officers of the civic-body’s education department and chairman of education committee would be provided password for online monitoring.
