South Delhi Municipal Corporation is mulling a proposal to tie-up with prestigious private schools in the city to minimise rush for admission, by creating more seats at nursery and primary levels.
As per the proposal, the corporation will provide its infrastructure to the elite schools to open branches with a rider that they reserve a certain number of seats for below poverty level (BPL) category students, admitted through the corporation.
‘We want to work with reputed public school groups such as the Delhi Public School (DPS) and DAV to upgrade our schools by using their brand name to attract middle class parents in the city who make a beeline to get their wards admitted to such public schools,’ said Satish Upadhayay, chairman of standing committee in South DMC.
He further added that the municipal commissioner in a recent meeting has given his consent to the proposal and the civic body will soon invite expression of interest from public school franchisees.
‘In the initial stage, we will implement the scheme on the pilot project basis, at least one in each of our four zones and later it would be expanded as per requirement,’ he added.
In the proposal, the interested groups would be given complete rights of management of the schools so that municipal schools would benefit from their expertise in school management.
‘Land has become one of the most expensive investment in the city for schools and we hope that more and more public school groups will come forward to adopt it,’ said Upadhayay.
Presently, South DMC has over 588 schools in its area in which students of only low income group and BPL families are enrolled.
